Oxytocin is a powerful hormone that aids labor. With its release, Oxytocin contracts the uterus to bring your baby into the world, creates euphoria and diminishes discomfort. It helps you bond with your baby and partner. How can you boost Oxytocin during labor?
1. Dancing is an effective way to boost Oxytocin levels during your birth. Try this: lean forward and move your hips in circles or figure eights. Focus on movements that feel good to you, and let your body be your guide. The moves that are most helpful for your birth will resonate with you, and you’ll feel yourself surrendering to the rhythm of birth. You will start to feel deliciously grounded, centered and euphoric.
2. Touch someone you love. Skin to skin contact with a loved one will raise your love hormone levels and help you feel protected, so you can go inward to the altered state of ‘laborland’ and tap in to your primal birth instincts, which will guide you to birth most effectively. Better still – touch someone you love skin to skin while dancing in their embrace!
3. Kiss your romantic partner. Not only will this raise your love hormone levels, it will help open your birth canal, which is intrinsically connected to your mouth. Oxytocin helps you create lasting love bonds with your partner and your baby (think carefully about who you allow in your birth room – you’ll start to feel love towards everyone present!).
Birth is the time when human beings receive their maximum amounts of love hormone, (so long as nothing interferes with its production which I’ll discuss in an upcoming post). Combine these simple ways to boost your love hormones and have a dancing, touching, kissing, cuddling love-fest of a birth!
