This week is National Midwifery Week! Today I’m sharing my personal midwifery birth story.
I was blessed many years ago during my first pregnancy when I chose midwifery care. At the time I didn’t realize what a pivotal decision that would turn out to be for me. My midwife did not restrict me from dancing (which I loved to do daily) during pregnancy, or make me stay in bed during my labor. In fact, I was never in a bed at any time during the birth, not even for “pushing”. She empowered me to give birth my own way, so I did what came naturally to me and danced my baby out. For most of the labor I danced in the shower, which was a great combo of movement and hot water. It felt good!
Because of her faith in me, and my faith in myself, I was able to have a euphoric and empowered birth experience that took my life in a totally new direction, and I found my calling. Since that beautiful day of Violette’s birth, I’ve had three more children (yes I danced!) and founded Dancing For Birth™ to help women activate their primal birth instincts as I had, for easier, safer births. Certified Dancing For Birth™ Instructors teach weekly around the world! The class combines three must-haves: prenatal fitness, childbirth education, and celebration! And once you give birth, come back with baby.
Who knows if DFB™ would exist if my birth had been like the births that so many women have described – painful, scary, disempowering. If I hadn’t had a midwife, I think my birth would have gone very differently. This week let’s celebrate midwives and empowered pregnancy everywhere!
